Young people in Spain are the biggest fans of livestreaming. This content, broadcast live on platforms such as Twitch and YouTube Live, has won over young people in the country, with almost two in five (37%) indulging in the practice every week, 10 points more than their European counterparts.
Watching live content has become a daily habit for many Internet users, and the trend is particularly noticeable among younger users. A recent survey by YPulse highlights how this kind of live broadcast appeals especially to young people in Spain, particularly via platforms such as Twitch.
The survey, carried out between Dec 26, 2023, and Jan 4, 2024, among 2,500 young people across the UK, France, Germany, Spain and Italy, aged between 13 and 39, reveals that 37% of young people in Spain watch livestreams every week, a figure 10 percentage points higher than the average for their European peers.
The role of esports
More than a quarter of Europeans surveyed said they watch livestream content every week. In Spain, almost two in five watch respondents say they watch livestreams.
Largely dominated by gamers, the livestream market draws the attention of esport competition fans, a field more than appreciated by young people in Spain. The popularity of esport – with more than three in four young people in Spain claiming to follow this field (+14 points compared to the European average) – suggests that they are particularly receptive to live content of this type.
The appeal of livestreams among young people in Spain can also be attributed to a number of factors, including the pre-eminence of the Spanish language, which facilitates access to a wide range of content from various countries. While English is equally useful, the YPulse study showed that livestreams do not appear to be very popular among Britons aged between 13 and 39.
YouTube Live stands out as the preferred platform for esport viewing among young Europeans. In Spain, Twitch comes second, ahead of other platforms, such as TikTok Live, which is in second place in the UK and Italy, according to the study. According to YPulse data, more than two in five young Spanish people say they turn to Twitch to watch esports, compared to less than a third in other European countries.
While Twitch and YouTube Live attract livestream fans, TikTok has also captured its share of this audience. On the Chinese social network, watching people’s reactions to videos has become the latest entertainment craze. – AFP Relaxnews
