SC launches book on 30 years of Malaysia’s capital market growth

KUALA LUMPUR: The Securities Commission Malaysia (SC) has released a book, “Capital Market in Malaysia – Past, Present, and Future”, which examines 30 years of Malaysia’s capital market growth and evolving global trends that will help shape the market in the near future.

SC chairman Datuk Seri Dr Awang Adek Hussin said the book is a gift to current and future SC staff, allowing them to understand why certain policies exist and how the SC operates.

“You learn from the past, take it forward and become part of the tapestry. To the young generation, please understand that it is not only what you do that matters, but also what others have done before you, which should be accorded equal importance,” he said at the book’s launch here today.

Awang Adek also highlighted that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has consented to write the foreword, and it is most befitting as he was the one who established the SC and was very much part of the SC’s history.

“Capital Market in Malaysia – Past, Present, and Future”, which also offers insight into the capital market’s workings was launched by the Sultan of Perak, Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah.

The SC published the book in conjunction with its 30th anniversary in 2023.

In his Royal Address, Sultan Nazrin said this book pays tribute to the power of people working in the SC and how individual minds, voices, and talents have come together over the decades to build the SC into an internationally celebrated regulatory body.

The 420-page book, written by veteran journalist Jennifer Jacobs, was based on fresh interviews and conversations with all the former and current SC chairmen, past and current SC senior management, industry experts, scholars, other regulators, and key stakeholders.

Some of their insights are being shared publicly for the first time, including how they addressed the 1997/1998 Asian Financial Crisis and other pressing issues while ensuring the market continued to operate and investors remained protected. – Bernama
