Playing with pops of colour in home decor

While neutral colour palettes and “tone on tone” may appeal to those who love minimalism, adding a “pop of colour” can help to energise a space.

Typically starting with a neutral foundation allows for the best ability to build or add pops of colour throughout while also allowing the colour to stand out and shine.

In general, the best pops of colour are those that will stand out and allow a colour to shine. Popular colours include green, mustard yellow, orange and blue.

Pops of colour can be integrated into a space in several ways.

Some of the easiest ways are to incorporate them through accents and accessories below:

TOP DOS AND DON’TS

Do

•Do integrate pops of colour using portable design elements that can easily be swapped in and out like toss pillows and throws.

•Do add pops of colour that complement the existing colours in a space.

•Do use pops of colour to energise or invigorate a space.

Don’t

•Don’t blend too many dark or light colours in a space; instead use pops of colour to add a sense of contrast.

•Don’t overwork your pops of colour. Instead of overloading a space with colour, use sprinkles of colour.

•Don’t overlook the colours black and white. These shades can be used within a room in powerful ways to add a sense of contrast and can be used as a colour pop. – Tribune News Service
