NEW DELHI: India on Thursday (July 11) raised border security concerns with Myanmar amid clashes between the ruling junta’s forces and an alliance of armed ethnic groups.
External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar met Myanmar’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister U Than Swe, who is in New Delhi to participate in the regional group BIMSTEC’s ministerial meeting.
“Shared our concerns regarding border stability and flow of displaced persons. Also spoke about issues of illegal narcotics and arms trade and activities of insurgent groups,” Jaishankar said in a social media post.
He said India supports the return to democracy in Myanmar and engages all stakeholders in this regard.
The Indian minister said he also “pressed strongly for the early return of Indians unlawfully detained by cyber scam gangs” in Myanmar.
Hundreds of Indian nationals recruited to run online scams from places like Cambodia, Myanmar and Laos have been rescued this year. – Bernama
