KUALA LUMPUR: Domestic tourism expenditure in the first quarter of 2024 (1Q24) soared 25.3% year-on-year to RM24.1bil, according to the Statistics Department.
It said the number of domestic visitors in Malaysia experienced a significant surge to record 58.6 million visitors in the period, up 19% compared with the same quarter last year.
“For a quarter-on-quarter comparison, domestic visitors increased 6.5% as compared to 4Q23,” it said in a statement.
Chief statistician Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin said the domestic tourism performance in Malaysia saw a sharp upturn in 2023, with a total spending of RM84.9bil compared with RM64.1bil in 2022.
“The significant hike in expenditure was attributed to the astounding increase of 34.4% in the number of tourists and 29.7% in excursionists, where tourist spending contribution accounted for the majority at 61.5% (2022: 60.7%),” he said. — Bernama
