Many incidents of cyberflashing are not reported, according to Bukit Aman’s Sexual, Women and Child Investigation Division (D11).
D11 principal assistant director Senior Asst Comm Siti Kamsiah Hassan said that the police are aware of these incidents.
“But the reports are few. And many only do so when it turns into a sextortion case,” she said.
For adults, SAC Kamsiah said that investigations can be conducted under the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, whereas for cases involving underage children, the police would conduct the investigations under the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017 as well.
“We have the laws and the associated punishments. We just need to educate people on the matter,” she said.
SAC Kamsiah noted that cases involving children were a huge worry as they could also involve sexual grooming.
Online behaviour has also led to children sharing such photos on their own.
“From late last year to this year, that’s the trend that we are seeing. The children themselves nak buat (want to do),” she said.
She also urges parents and guardians to be vigilant about their children’s Internet access.
