Coachella festival will soon be back in California – and on YouTube. For this ultra-popular music festival, the streaming video platform will once again be broadcasting concerts from all six stages, with a special new “multiview” feature this year.
For the second year running, internet users will be able to follow and enjoy the artists’ Coachella performances by visiting YouTube. The platform will broadcast concerts from the festival’s six stages. But this year, the video giant will also be introducing a new feature: “multiview.”
This means you can watch several concerts simultaneously on your screen. A first, as the American company points out: “YouTube’s multiview will be available for the very first time in music and around the world during Coachella 2024.
The big screen production will be tailored so that viewers everywhere can watch up to four of the live stream stages on their TVs at once while listening to the audio of their choice. Two of your favourite bands playing on different stages at the same time? No problem, “multiview will have you and your friends covered to catch both sets at the same time via the YouTube app on TV, at no additional cost,” reads the official blog.
Fans can choose from six stages over the two weekends of the festival, which this year will welcome Tyler The Creator, Doja Cat, Ice Spice, Lana Del Rey, Blur, No Doubt and Sabrina Carpenter.
In addition to the Multiview feature, YouTube will optimize the Coachella at-home experience with several other options. Users will be able to toggle between the audio streams of different stages, participate in live chats with other fans and use QR codes to facilitate their purchases of merchandise.
The first weekend kicks off on Friday, April 12 at 4pm Pacific time, followed by Friday, April 19 at the same time.
“We’ll be capturing exclusive behind the scenes content on YouTube Shorts and for the first time, Highsnobiety will be partnering with us on site to capture backstage portraits of Artists and Creators,” Ali Rivera, head of YouTube’s live music and artist partnerships business. told The Hollywood Reporter.
The “multiview” format that enables multiple viewing has become increasingly popular with young people. Forty-four percent of Gen Z are more likely to watch multiple content on different media at the same time than to focus on a single piece of content, according to a study, published in 2023.
In the run-up to “March Madness,” the annual national college baksetball championship tournament, one of the biggest sporting events in the United States, YouTube TV tested out the “multiview” approach.
Initially reserved for a limited number of users, the feature has become a favorite among sports and now music fans. “This year after multiview became a critical part of the NFL Sunday Ticket experience, we knew how valuable it could be if applied to the Coachella viewing experience,” said Ali Rivera.
“Today, we’re seeing that viewers are watching content in new ways and interestingly, YouTube watchtime on connected TVs has grown to over 1 billion hours daily,” she added. – AFP Relaxnews
